Playing with Sustainability Via Board Game
Playing with Sustainability Via Board Game
During my Master’s research, I created a project journal to track my processes from conception to final outcome.
In my master course, I explored ways in which design can enable different options to attract people’s attention specially children +8 about saving the environment specially wetlands and sustainable use of them and take small steps that will lead to a big impact in future. .Also, apply graphic design values, features and innovative ideas in order to raise people’s awareness about the importance of environment for human being and making them aware that conservation of environment is an integral step to ensure our planet will continue to be in existence for future generations.
During this project different ways was reviewed, and I chose board game as a good way to educate and raise children awareness about wetlands, I start my journey through review the rules, instructions, objectives, designs and graphics of several kinds of board games and environmental ones.
Snake and Ladders
Snake and Ladders
According to research made on different kinds of board games and based on their strengthens and weaknesses, I inspire from some important factors on them to design my educational-environmental board game.
I inspire my board game’s strategy from snake and ladders rules and combine them with some environmentally important features like wetland’s obstacles, threatens, importance and solutions to help our wetlands and sustainably conserve them through the experiences children will be gained via playing game.
Sample my design in nature and then simulated the game in 3-D Max and V-ray.
Master Result
According to the research made about the pros and cons of the different ways to educate and raise children and young people’s awareness about Environment, I realized that all of them has their own strengths and weaknesses. However, each of these awareness raising materials can be used to increase children’s awareness in the field of environment and wetlands. The use of all these informative tools can be useful in different situations for different target groups. Considering my chosen target groups and the strengths that board games can provide in educating and raising children’s awareness about wetlands, designing and using board games can be a good option to achieve the goal. It is also obvious that the strengthens of the board games outweigh the other educational materials since board game not only help me to achieve my goal about educating children on wetland conservation through applying and introducing wetland related information, rules, material and species, but also have some obvious benefits for children such as being attractive and entertaining, build their communication skills, teach them to follow instructions, learn them to fail and pick themselves up and try again when things go wrong, encourage healthy competition and problem-solving.
Through designing an environmental board game, we can illustrate wetland ecosystem, species, threats, importance, problems and find some solutions to tackle the problems as well as using them to increase interest and understanding of the participants about wetlands and biodiversity through a variety of activities that are also fun.
